Police Arrest Man Vowing To Swim Across BayMarch 29, 2009SAN DIEGO -- A man who jumped in the bay from the Broadway Pier and announced that he was swimming to Coronado Island was taken into custody after harbor police finally hauled him into a boat, it was reported Sunday. It was unclear early Sunday if the man, who jumped into the water about 5:50 p.m. Saturday, was booked for a crime. Harbor police Sgt. Robert Mickschl told the San Diego Union-Tribune it was illegal to swim in the area because of boat traffic. Harbor police in a boat, aided by divers, tried to persuade the man to climb aboard, but he refused, he said. After about 45 minutes, once the heavyset man had gotten about 1,000 yards from shore, he was wrestled into a boat, and one officer was injured, the newspaper reported. Paramedics checked out the man at the G Street Mole, where he was taken into custody. Return to San Diego Local News Roundup |
