Boy Who Shot BB Gun At School ArrestedMarch 20, 2009CREST, Calif. -- A 14-year-old boy is in custody Friday accused of shooting a BB gun on the grounds of an East County primary school while students were present, authorities said. Someone reported seeing shots fired at Crest Elementary School on Suncrest Boulevard about 2:45 p.m. Thursday, San Diego County sheriff's Lt. Sylvester Washington said. Administrators kept all students and teachers inside their classrooms and offices while deputies searched the school grounds and surrounding areas. At around 3:15 p.m., a librarian who works next door to the school at the Crest Public Library heard authorities broadcasting a description of the shooter from a police helicopter, Sgt. Joseph Sprecco said. The librarian then immediately called authorities to say that a teen sitting in the rear of the library matched the description, Sprecco said. Deputies went to the library and took the boy into custody. They also found a BB gun hidden in a planter just outside the library's door, according to Sprecco, who said two people positively identified the boy as the shooter. About 4:15 p.m., the teen was arrested on suspicion of possession of a weapon on school grounds and misdemeanor vandalism, according to Washington. No injuries were reported but two windows at the school were damaged, Sprecco said. Return to San Diego Local News Roundup |
