Police: Thief Tries To Sell Hot Car To OwnerApril 9, 2009Suspect Admits To Stealing Car, Trailer, Parts, Police Say BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. -- Police in Boynton Beach said a car thief was arrested after he listed a stolen car for sale online and someone notified its owner. According to Boynton Beach police, on Sunday, someone stole a 1970 two-door Chevelle, which had no engine or transmission, and a 1989 trailer from a property owned by 52-year-old Carlo Avolio, of Coconut Creek, Fla., reported WPLG-TV in Miami. Later that day, someone posted an ad on Craigslist, trying to sell the Chevelle, police said. The person who posted the ad offered to sell the Chevelle and trailer in exchange for $5,000 or body work and a paint job on his own car. Potential buyer David Povio, 38, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., went to look at the car. Police said Povio became suspicious when the seller said he had found the Chevelle abandoned on a property in Lantana, Fla. So, Povio looked up the name of the property owner, Avolio, and called him. Suspicious that the Chevelle was his car, Avolio pretended to be an interested buyer and set up an appointment with the seller, then called police. According to investigators, Avolio went to a home on Baytree Circle in Boynton Beach to look at the car at about 8 p.m. Monday. He told police the car belonged to him. Police arrested the car theft suspect, 19-year-old William Paul Jones. Investigators said Jones admitted cutting a lock at the Lantana property and using a Chevrolet Blazer to steal the Chevelle and the trailer, as well as other car parts. Jones also broke into the abandoned house on Baytree Circle to store and show the stolen car, police said. Jones faces charges of grand theft auto, burglary and dealing in stolen property.
