Escondido Nursing Home Fined For Choking Death
March 13, 2009ESCONDIDO, Calif. -- A San Diego County nursing home was fined $90,000 Thursday after a resident choked to death at lunch.
Escondido Care Center also was cited for poor treatment and supervision.
A state report said a man on a strict diet because he had trouble chewing and swallowing died last November when food became stuck in his windpipe.
The man was eating a lunch of beef with barbecue sauce, mashed potatoes, steamed cabbage and carrots when he coughed several times and slumped over in his wheelchair.
Efforts to revive him failed.
The care center appealed the citation.
