El Cajon Navy Nurse Florence Choe Killed In AfghanistanMarch 29, 2009EL CAJON, Calif. -- A Navy nurse from El Cajon was killed while on duty when an insurgent posing as an Afghan National Army soldier fatally shot her and another officer, the Pentagon announced Saturday. Lt. Florence B. Choe, 35, died Friday at Camp Shaheen in Mazar-E-Sharif, Afghanistan. She was assigned to the Combined Security Transition Command on the base. Lt.j.g. Francis L. Toner IV, 26, a civil engineer from Narragansett, R.I., also died in the shooting. The Pentagon did not say how long Choe had been in Afghanistan, but she ran in the Falmouth Road Race at Camp Mike Spann in Afghanistan in August 2008. A third member of the U.S. military was wounded in the shooting. The insurgent killed himself, officials told the Los Angeles Times.
