SDPD Settles Lawsuit With Family Of Shot ManMarch 25, 2009SAN DIEGO -- San Diego has agreed to pay $325,000 to settle a wrongful-death lawsuit filed by the family of a young man fatally shot by police during a traffic stop four years ago, it was reported Wednesday. The San Diego City Council unanimously agreed Tuesday to pay the settlement to the family of Jacob Richard Faust even though District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said the shooting was legally justified, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported. Faust was fatally shot on April 4, 2005, after he was pulled over for making an illegal left turn. Officers Stephen Holliday fired three times at Faust, mortally wounding the 25-year-old, after he reached behind his car's front seat and pulled out a prop gun. "We didn't feel the officers did anything wrong, but you never know what a jury would do," Deputy city attorney Don Shanahan told the newspaper. "If we were found liable, the damages could have been greatly higher." Return to San Diego Local News Roundup |
