Man gets 14 years for role in killing of teensMarch 12, 2009SAN DIEGO COURTS: A man convicted of manslaughter for participating in the fatal shootings of two teenagers in southeastern San Diego more than two years ago was sentenced Tuesday to 14 years in prison. Anthony Louis Torian, 23, pleaded guilty to two counts of voluntary manslaughter in the deaths of Brandon Hammond and Marcelles McElvaine, both 19. The victims were shot Dec. 6, 2006, in a cul-de-sac in Bay Terraces. Prosecutors argued in San Diego Superior Court that Torian and another man, Deshawn Broadnax, were gang members, and the shootings on Deep Dell Court were retaliation for another killing a day earlier. Deputy District Attorney Mark Amador has said the two victims were not involved in gangs and there was no evidence they had anything to do with the death of Ahmad Lewis, 19. Torian, who prosecutors said was the getaway driver, testified at Broadnax's trial. He said Broadnax persuaded him to drive to the Meadowbrook apartment complex on Paradise Valley Road, in rival gang territory. He said he saw Broadnax walk around a corner and then heard gunshots. Broadnax ran back to the car, and the two men drove off. In December, a jury found Broadnax, 22, guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and other charges. He was sentenced last month to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Return to San Diego Local News Roundup |
