Several People Attacked By Swarm Of BeesMarch 26, 2009LA MESA, Calif. -- Four people in two locations in La Mesa were stung by killer (Africanized) bees Wednesday, authorities said. Firefighters dispatched to Lowell Street and Normal Avenue about 4 p.m. found an 82-year-old man and a 79-year-old woman who had been stung by bees as many as 50 times, said Sonny Saghera of La Mesa. A 36-year-old mother and her 11-year-old son were also stung about five times. They were being treated at Grossmont Hospital, Saghera said. An Africanized bee hive was found in a home in the 7500 block of Normal Avenue, Saghera said. "They had been inside the roof area of the house and had been there for quite a while," Saghera said, citing information from Anthony's Bee Service. "The hive had no more room to grow, and a new queen bee was hatched that took half of the bees in the hive to find a new location to live. It is this swarm that attacked the victims." The bee hive was removed, but residents were told to remain in their homes. Killer bees, technically called Africanized bees, have been invading the United States for some time.
