Eight-month Pregnant Woman Charged with Drunk DrivingApril 2, 2009An eight-months pregnant Fort Wayne woman was arrested early Saturday morning for drinking and driving, her second such arrest in 2009, state police said in a news release today. Originally stopped for driving without head- or taillights around 4 a.m. Saturday morning, Molly E. Gram, 21, had a “strong odor of alcohol, bloodshot eyes and slurred speech,” said Sgt. Ron Galaviz of the Indiana State Police’s Fort Wayne District. Advertisement “After Trooper (Caleb) Anderson asked her to exit her vehicle, he promptly realized she was pretty far along (in her pregnancy),” Galaviz said. “Gram also confirmed she was eight months pregnant.” Gram failed several field sobriety tests and a portable breath test, but Galaviz said he only knew she tested above 0.08, the legal limit in Indiana. She later refused a chemical alcohol test for intoxication. Galaviz didn’t know where or why Gram had allegedly been drinking that evening. “Unfortunately she was not only putting herself and her unborn baby in danger by her actions, she was also jeopardizing the safety of other motorists,” he said. After she was medically cleared to be incarcerated by St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne -- “We don’t just throw women who are eight-months pregnant in jail,” Galaviz said -- Gram was taken to the Allen County Jail in Fort Wayne and booked on a felony charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and several misdemeanor OWI charges. Galaviz said it was her second drinking and driving arrest in less than three months and her third OWI arrest in less than a year. Return to San Diego Local News Roundup |
