MTS Employee Killed By Police After Shooting 2 Co-WorkersMarch 24, 2009SAN DIEGO -- A veteran Metropolitan Transit System employee walked into an employee lounge early Tuesday morning with a gun and killed one co-worker and seriously injured another before he was shot to death by police, authorities said. The shooter, who worked for MTS for the past 29 years, arrived at the MTS complex at 100 16th St., near Petco Park, shortly before 2:15 a.m., San Diego police Lt. Jim Collins said. Reporter Marissa Cabrera reported that the shooter made threats and said, "No one is leaving." Moments later, a man was fatally shot in the head and another man was seriously injured, Collins said. When San Diego police officers responded to a report of gunfire they found the armed suspect in the parking lot, Cabrera reported. A police spokesperson told Cabrera that when the officers ordered the shooter to put down the weapon the shooter instead picked up a cell phone, made a phone call and raised the gun. Police then shot the shooter. Collins said both the shooter and one of the victims died at the scene. An MTS spokesman said one of the victims was a foreman and the other a mechanic. The employee who was injured suffered a life-threatening wound and was rushed to the hospital, according to Collins. The motive for the shooting was under investigation, Collins said. MTS officials said customers should notice few disruptions to service. Return to San Diego Local News Roundup |
