Fire Destoys Ocean Beach Home, Arson Unit InvestigatingMarch 22, 2009SAN DIEGO -- An Ocean Beach home was destroyed Sunday morning after a suspicious trash fire spread to the house, police said. No one was injured in the fire that started in a plastic trash can on the 2000 block Abbott Street, said San Diego police Sgt. Ray Battrick. The flames jumped to the porch of the home, and the entire structure was swallowed up in the flames, he said. Battrick said no one was home at the time of the blaze, which was just before 5 a.m. The fire was deemed "suspicious" and an arson unit was investigating, Battrick said. The San Diego Fire Department estimates that the fire caused about $250,000 worth of damage to the structure and $100,000 to the home's contents, a dispatcher said.
