90-Year-Old Priest Gives $15k Cash To Poor
March 18, 2009LOS ANGELES -- A Catholic priest in Los Angeles has marked his 90th birthday by handing out thousands to the less fortunate.
Father Maurice Chase gave away $15,000 in cash from his own pockets to residents at L.A.'s Skid Row.
He doled it out to hundreds of people outside a mission. Twenty wheelchair-bound people received crisp $100 bills, while the rest received $1 to $3 each. The gathering was watched over by police officers.
Chase called the donation "the Lord's work" and his way of showing the needy that they are loved.
Chase has given away cash, plastic rosaries and blessings every Sunday on the same corner for 24 years. He also comes on Thanksgiving and Christmas, too.
