Robert Stewart Shoots Up Nursing Home - 8 DeadMarch 29, 2009CARTHAGE, N.C. -- The man suspected of killing eight people at a North Carolina nursing home on Sunday recently told his ex-wife that he was preparing for a long trip. Robert Stewart's ex-wife, Sue Griffin, said he had been reaching out recently to family members, telling them he had cancer and was planning to "go away." "He did have some violent tendencies from time to time," she said. Seven residents and a nurse were killed in the shooting. At least three others were wounded. State Sen. Harris Blake of Moore County said the gunman came in and started "shooting everything around" at Pinelake Health and Rehab. A police officer was also wounded before the man was shot and apprehended, authorities said. Stewart, 45, was charged with eight counts of first-degree murder and a single charge of felony assault of a law enforcement officer. Police said Stewart was not a patient or an employee at the nursing home, and isn't believe to be related to any of the victims. The nursing home residents ranged in age from 78 to 98 years old.
