Whale Remains in San Diego BayMarch 29, 2009SAN DIEGO -- A wayward gray whale was spotted in the San Diego Bay Saturday. Boat captain Troy Sears told us he saw the whale Saturday morning off Harbor Island. The last confirmed Coast Guard sighting of the 30-foot whale was last Wednesday near the Embarcadero, said USCG Lt. Josh Nelson. Moments before Saturday's sighting, Nelson said when the whale isn't spotted for a few days it didn't necessarily mean Diego was able to rejoin the thousands of other gray whales that annually migrate from Baja California to Alaska. "If we don't see him for a while it will seem that he has headed out, but then he'll pop up again," Nelson said. The marine mammal was first sighted on March 10 and has become a popular tourist attraction. Whale watching tours are available on the bay front and people still gather at the Embarcadero area with binoculars hoping to spot Diego. The Coast Guard is not actively tracking the whale but is continuing to issue a marine advisory reminding boaters that, by federal law, they must stay at least 100 yards away from all leviathans.
