MTS: 228 Serious Crimes On, Near Trolley In 2008
March 13, 2009SAN DIEGO -- The number of serious crimes committed on the San Diego Trolley and railway property last year went up by 50 over the previous year's, it was reported Friday.
Metropolitan Transit System officials said there were 228 serious crimes committed on or around the Trolley last year compared to 178 in 2007, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.
The MTS defines serious crime as homicide, assault, robbery and theft. More than half of the serious crimes reported last year -- 124 -- involved theft.
MTS security chief Bill Burke told the Union-Tribune that cell phone and iPods were the most popular targets for thieves.
To help curb serious crime, MTS officials in the second half of last year increased undercover operations and reminded riders to be more careful with their belongings.
MTS also increased the number of security officers and surveillance cameras at stations. The agency plans to install cameras on all trolley cars by 2011, the Union-Tribune reported.
The trolley system covers 53 miles and includes 53 stations. It posted a ridership of 36 million last year.
