Bomb Squad Disables Backpack Full Of Pipe BombsMarch 24, 2009SANTEE, Calif. -- A man dropped off a backpack full of pipe bombs at an East County sheriff's substation Monday afternoon, prompting its closure along with part of the street in front of the building. The bag was brought to the lobby of the Santee Sheriff's Station on Cuyamaca Street about 2 p.m., sheriff's Lt. Mike Munsey said. Deputies cleared everyone out of the immediate area and closed down the street in front of the station, between Buena Vista Avenue and Mission Gorge Road, Munsey said. Trolley service through the area also was disrupted. After determining that the seven cylinders in the bag were pipe bombs, an explosives team removed them from the building and used remote-control equipment to safely detonate them on a nearby roadside in the late afternoon. Authorities re-opened the street about 5 p.m. Deputies were questioning the man who brought the homemade grenades to the station, Sgt. Damon Blankenbaker told reporters. The man said he found them in a nearby riverbed, sheriff's spokeswoman Jan Caldwell said. Return to San Diego Local News Roundup |
