SWAT Team Ends 4-Hour El Cajon StandoffMarch 20, 2009EL CAJON, Calif. -- A four-hour standoff in El Cajon ended peacefully around 5:15 Friday morning after a SWAT team used a flash-bang device to draw out an armed man who had threatened a neighbor. The incident began around midnight in the 1500 block of Graves Avenue after 38-year-old Johnathan Terrell got into a verbal argument with one of his neighbors, San Diego Sheriff deputies told 10News. A female neighbor said that she heard knocking on her door and thought it was kids playing but it was Terrell with a gun yelling racially-charged statements at her. She then ran into her bedroom with her kids and called her husband. When the woman's husband arrived home he confronted Terrell. Neighbors said Terrell later pointed a rifle at the woman's apartment. When authorities arrived, Terrell refused to leave his apartment. Authorities evacuated 16 apartment units. Some of the residents went to the Santee Substation. A SWAT team was later called in to handle the situation. Ultimately, they used a used a flash-bang device to get Terrell out. Negotiators had been on the phone with Terrell for at least four hours when he surrendered at 5:15 a.m. Residents of the apartment complex were allowed to return at around 6 a.m A Sheriff's Department official said they are investigating the incident.
