Tripp Palin's Father Discusses BreakupMarch 16, 2009Alaska Governor's Unwed Teen Daughter Gave Birth In December The former fiancé of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's daughter said he hopes they can reconcile at some point. Levi Johnston, 19, told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Monday that he and 18-year-old Bristol Palin ended their engagement after deciding it would be better if they separated for a while. The Alaska governor, chosen to be Sen. John McCain's presidential running mate in the 2008 general election, disclosed the pregnancy of her unwed teenage daughter on the first day of the Republican National Convention in 2008, immediately setting up a public relations frenzy over what constituted traditional values among social conservatives powerful within the GOP. Republicans closed ranks around the Palins and insisted that the most important message from the news was not that a conservative Christian mother's teenage daughter was having sex out of wedlock, but that the two teenagers had decided to keep the baby rather than opt for an abortion. The teenage couple attended the party's convention, even while party representatives insisted that they be kept immune from political attacks. Tripp Palin was born on Dec. 27. Johnston said the couple needed time to grow up before following through on marriage plans. "I'd like to get back together with her. I don't know what she's thinking," he said. "Whatever happens, happens." Asked if they are civil when chatting, he said, "Yeah. For the most part." He said he sees his son "whenever I want to." Return to San Diego Local News Roundup |
