Waterman Says Police Officers Injured HimMarch 20, 2009SAN DIEGO -- For the first time in four days, the long lines on 17th Street in downtown San Diego were back -- and so was the "Waterman." "The people that are in this line, they are in an unfortunate situation, whatever it happens to be. They don't get bottled water," said David Ross. Ross has been passing out water for years to the homeless. He was doing the same thing Sunday when there was an altercation with police. "They were frantic, and it was almost a riot out here," said one witness. Ross claimed police brutality, and said he was pushed to the ground, kicked and suffered and injured arm and concussion. San Diego police said the officers involved were trying to keep the crowd from spilling into the street when things got out of hand. Ross has hired an attorney, 10News learned. "Whether I'm going to take this any further or not depends on the reaction of the police department, and the city, and a lot of things," said Ross. For now, Ross said he would keep doing what he's been doing -- serving the homeless as the Waterman. "I'm back; you can't leak the water out of the Waterman," said Ross. The San Diego Police Department is currently taking statements from witnesses, and said it hopes to have the matter resolved soon. Return to San Diego Local News Roundup |
